It offers a novel opportunity to explore literary masterpieces on your smartphone or tablet, revealing insights that may not be immediately apparent in modern editions.

The app presents three distinct viewing options for the reading of first editions: the traditional E-Book view, the original scan view displaying high-resolution images of the original pages, and an innovative hybrid view that combines both formats. The hybrid mode enables readers to overlay the original text with a preferred font, facilitating personalized reading experiences while preserving the authentic aura of the original editions and allowing for comfortable annotation.

Users can delve into works such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s (1749-1832) "The Sorrows of Young Werther," explore Christian Morgenstern’s (1871-1914) linguistically inventive "Galgenlieder," or trace Heinrich Heine’s (1797-1856) journey through "Germany. A Winter’s Tale." The collection also includes Adalbert Stifter’s (1805-1868) vivid nature descriptions in "Colorful Stones," Karl Philipp Moritz’s (1756-1793) psychological novel "Anton Reiser," Arthur Schnitzler’s (1862-1931) provocative drama "Reigen," and Franz Kafka’s (1883-1924) perplexing masterpiece "The Metamorphosis." These selections span from the Enlightenment through the 20th century and comprise first independent print editions or substantially revised versions by the authors.

First editions hold significant intellectual and material value, cherished as rare collectibles. In literary scholarship, they are crucial for tracing textual history and understanding authorial intentions. Over its more than 450 years of history, the Bavarian State Library Munich has diligently acquired many priceless and rare first editions across all literary periods. This curated digital presentation aims to make these invaluable works accessible to a broad audience online.
